Welcome to Block Island

One of the Last Great Places on Earth. And one of the 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.

Just off the coast of Rhode Island lies a place that somehow feels worlds away. Block Island is a timeless New England escape of dramatic bluffs, rolling green hills, stone walls, winding roads, historic lighthouses and miles of beautiful coastline.

It's the kind of place where you leave the car behind, hop on a bike, spend the afternoon at the beach and watch the sun disappear into the Atlantic.

One of the "Last Great Places"

In 1991, The Nature Conservancy named Block Island one of just 12 "Last Great Places" in the Western Hemisphere — recognition of the island's extraordinary natural beauty, rare wildlife and commitment to conservation.

Today, nearly half of Block Island is permanently protected, preserving the open spaces, trails and landscapes that make the island feel so wonderfully untouched.

A Place to See Before You Die

Block Island has also earned a place in Patricia Schultz's celebrated 1,000 Places to See Before You Die travel collection.

And once you arrive, it's easy to understand why.

There are no traffic lights. No high-rise resorts. No endless rows of chain restaurants. Instead, you'll find beaches, bicycles, sailboats, weathered cottages, stone walls and the unmistakable feeling that you've discovered somewhere special.

28 Miles of Trails

Beyond the beaches, Block Island is made for exploring. More than 28 miles of walking trails wind through protected fields, wetlands, coastal bluffs and nature preserves.

Walk the dramatic trails of Clay Head, explore Rodman's Hollow, or simply take a dirt road and see where it leads.

Beaches, Bluffs & Lighthouses

Block Island's coastline is its centerpiece.

Climb down to the beach beneath the Mohegan Bluffs, visit the historic Southeast Lighthouse, bike north toward North Light, or find your own quiet stretch of sand and stay awhile.

Some days are meant for exploring. Others are meant for doing absolutely nothing.

Island Time

Perhaps the best thing about Block Island is what isn't here.

Life moves a little slower. The roads are quieter. The stars seem brighter. And it's remarkably easy to forget about everything waiting for you back on the mainland.

Come for the beaches. Explore the island. Stay for the sunsets.

Welcome to one of the Last Great Places.
