Biking Block Island

Block Island is one of the best places on the East Coast to explore by bike. The island is about 7 miles long and 3 miles wide, with no traffic lights and roads that wind through open moorland, past stone walls, and along the coast. Most of it is rideable in a day at an easy pace.

Bike rentals are available right at the Old Harbor ferry landing — you can be on the road within minutes of stepping off the boat. Most rental shops offer cruisers, hybrids, and e-bikes by the hour or day.

A few routes worth knowing: the ride south to Mohegan Bluffs and the Southeast Lighthouse is the classic, about 3 miles each way with a gentle climb near the end. The loop around the northern end of the island passes Sachem Pond and the North Lighthouse, with open views across the water. For something quieter, the dirt paths through the Greenway trail system cut through the interior of the island and are good for mountain bikes.
