Mohegan Bluffs

Mohegan Bluffs run along the southern edge of Block Island for about two miles, dropping 150 feet straight down to a narrow beach below. It's the most dramatic landscape on the island, and one of the few places where you genuinely feel the scale of the Atlantic.

A wooden staircase descends from the bluff top to the beach — about 140 steps down, so plan for the climb back up. The beach at the bottom is rocky and rarely crowded. At low tide you can walk along the base of the cliffs and watch the layers of clay and glacial till up close.

The Southeast Lighthouse sits at the eastern end of the bluffs and is worth combining into the same walk. Most people park near the lighthouse and walk west along the bluff path, which takes about 20 minutes each way.

Good to know

  • The staircase to the beach is steep — wear shoes with grip
  • Best visited in the morning before the afternoon wind picks up
  • About 3 miles from the ferry landing by bike, roughly 20 minutes
  • No facilities at the bluffs — bring water
